Handmade Book

Fresh From the Bookmaking Workshop.
All the struggling I have done trying to make hand bound journals ~ this weekend I went to a workshop and learned how to do it correctly! We all know doing something correctly is so much easier. All the time I was stitching the signatures I kept thinking, "I'm doing this! I'm doing this, and it is so easy now!" The class was from 10 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. and we were exhausted when we were finished.

So seven and a half hours and $130 later I have a beautiful hand bound book. That $130 doesn't include shoe shopping the day before, and buying extra book materials that I just couldn't live without. It was a perfect girls' weekend.

Well, so much for blogging every day in November, huh? I will really try to stay on track for the rest of the month. And I think I am home for awhile. I have info to get out for my next class session, a card order to fill, some new cards to design for an order, and some things to get ready for the Art Center Christmas show. And of course, I have to stay one step ahead of my Wednesday class ~ they just get better and better every week.

I sure would like to make one of those for myself...Do you use Aquarius II for the watercolor paper?
I'll try and see if that instruction is offered anywhere around here :-)
I bet I could get Terry A. to go with me.
It sounds like you learned some new techniques.
I'm about to start on making a new Travel Sketchbook.

Hi Marj,
The paper was not Aquarius but "text cover" - I think. We didn't have a choice of paper, but it is beautiful paper. I don't think it would take watercolor however. When I do my own I will try Aquarius.

The class was in Ann Arbor - that's not TOO far from you. Check out the link on my blog post to see what they have going.

Oh!...what a beautiful book. I have always wanted to make one, but never have. Now that you are going to be doing it right and easy...(or easier), what are you doing with your previous ones? Or are they chucked full of sketches? I would love to buy one if you ever put 'em up for sale!
Down with my leg, which is on a heating pad, embroidering tiny toys on a blanket for the grandbaby who is 3 weeks away. (I'm stitching them around the edges.) The middle is a large picture of a floppy-eared bunny I drew...holding it's patchwork blanket; bluebirds and chicks here and there, all done in stitches with shiny rayon thread, giving it depth and shadows. Art, too...not? BJR

Hi BJR,
I do have some unfinished books, so now I think I can finish them correctly - the finished ones are full of sketches. It takes me so long to make one that I don't think anyone could afford it :)

Your baby blanket sounds wonderful. Yes - art too!
