Shoo!

How Bold!
This is a beautiful deer, but I would really rather it left the gardens alone. As it walked past the neighbor's door on the way to drink from the bird bath, it didn't even care that I sat right there and took pictures. It had been eating a LOT of plants from the garden. This is too much - too bold in broad day light! We live in the city.

Between the deer and the six inch slugs chomping their way through our gardens, we aren't going to have much left. I am trying to figure out what they don't eat, but year to year they seem to be quite inconsistent.

I am working on binding a book for a gift, working on lesson plans and class schedules, printing cards, and I wanted to post some pages from the Summer Kick-Off. The problem is the grandkids - they are not here today and it is too quiet! Focus, Cath, focus.

  1. Diatomaceous earth will kill slugs and snails that try to eat your plants. You sprinkle it around the garden, in a nrrow line. When slugs and snails crawl across it, it scratches their soft parts and they die of dehydration.

For the deer, you need a Standard Poodle or other watch-type dog who will bark its head off whenever the dear approach! When we had a silent Standard Poodle, we had deer on the front porch. No more. The two we have now announce EVERYTHING, including butterflies, moths and chipmunks.

  2. Don't know if this works or not...but I just started saving all my eggshells & let them dry, crush them and sprinkle around my Hollyhocks (that's where I had most slugs, etc.) So far, so good.
Always enjoy your style of painting (so loose) which I try to emulate (how many years?) Keep it up Catherine, you're an inspiration.

  3. crazy - we live in the middle of a ton of trees and "mini" woods and I have only seen 2 deer in our yard this year. Our neighbors have a lot of deer - but then no one else has 6 kids and 3 dogs. :)

  4. Thanks, all, for the anti-pest ideas. I'm thinking I like the six kids and three dogs idea best:)
